Volunteer with Embrace
Embrace volunteers are comprised of patients, parents, siblings, friends, partners, professionals and members of the community who share in the belief that the stigma of mental illness must stop. The discrimination of those who are suffering from mental illness must stop. We know that mental illness is treatable and that the stigma, discrimination, and financial cost of treatment should never be barriers to seeking help.
One of the best ways you can help someone with mental illness is by understanding what it is and is not. It is the myths about mental illnesses that contribute to the stigma. And for many the stigma surrounding mental illness prevents them from seeking much needed and even lifesaving help.
The fact is a mental illness is a disorder of the brain, that can include, but is not limited to: Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Schizophrenia and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Like most diseases of the body, mental illness has many causes from genetics to other biological, environmental and social/cultural factors. And just as with most diseases, mental illness is no one's fault. Most importantly, mental illness is treatable and with treatment those who live with mental illness have the opportunity to lead full and productive lives.
Your involvement with Embrace contributes to the helping and healing of those afflicted. Your compassion and care are vital to making this happen.
